When Beer Geeks visits a brewery, we want to make sure you get the experience of being on the inside along with us. When Michael talks with his old friend, Stone Brewery Co. co-founder and brewing legend Greg Koch about Stone’s expansion to a double-system brew house, we take you right into the middle of the equipment.
And for Michael, this was a nostalgic walk-around, since he was on site a few years back when Stone installed their first 30-barrel system here.
(Greg, on the extreme left, had short hair back then)
Now, they’ve got two 120-barrel systems running in tandem. But even with the big, hi-tech setup, Greg and his team are obsessed with making sure everything is done correctly – the hands on attention that makes craft beer special. When we visited, Michael helped brew an Imperial Russian Stout with espresso. Which meant filling cheesecloth bags with 100 pounds of ground espresso beans and dumping them by hand into whirlpool.
This was a great visit. To a great brewery. And it’s a great episode.
