Short Pour: By the Barrel

Wood is on a roll.

For centuries, beer was made in wooden vessels. Then came stainless steel – easier to keep clean and easier to maintain. But everything old is eventually new again. And one of the hottest trends in craft brewing these days is wood.

More and more brewers are now barrel aging beers – sometimes for years at a time - in wooden barrels. The beers are enhanced by the wood, by the remnants of the wine or spirits previously in the barrels, and in the case of Belgian style beers and sours, the barrels are a perfect environment for bacteria and wild yeast to create complex and unique flavors.

Beer Geeks host Michael Ferguson is a big fan of barrel aging – and is always on the lookout for a brewery that’s gone wild for wood.
