Famed game developer Shigeru Miyamoto has released some pretty bold statements regarding the future of Nintendo. In an interview with Edge magazine posted by the publication's sister outlet CVG, this is the first time a Nintendo executive has expressed a move away from the casual market amassed by the Wii and WiiU.

Nintendo is known for their innovative hardware designs that targeted new audiences like senior citizens, young children, and fitness enthusiasts. This marks a shift back towards the hardcore gamers that Nintendo has ignored in recent years.

"Fortunately, because of the spread of smart devices, people take games for granted now. It's a good thing for us, because we do not have to worry about making games something that are relevant to general people's daily lives."

He goes on to admit that the WiiU provides new game design challenges, but he’s positive its quirks will work for them in the end.

"Of course we had some concerns. After all, we're human beings: our eyes cannot see two objects at the same time. But we were sure that, even with that kind of, say, weak point, we would be able to make something unprecedented and revolutionary."

As a hardcore gamer who started with Zelda and Kirby as a kid, I want to have faith that Nintendo will actually follow up on these sentiments. I have the utmost respect for anyone who's able to get the common folk to invest in a console and join the community, which they've accomplished 2 consoles in a row. But in doing so, they helped split the gaming world into the casual and hardcore halves that don't have much in common. If there's any company who can bring all gamers back together, it's Nintendo.

Miyamoto also revealed that the highly-anticipated WiiU title Splatoon originally started as a Mario game. I can definitely see that since the trailer gives off strong Super Mario Sunshine vibes, but I’m glad they’re starting a new IP. In case you missed it, here’s the trailer for the game from this year’s E3.
