Tokyo Game Show 2014 Highlights, Part 1

Gaming juggernauts are coming out swinging at TGS with some amazing trailers.

We’re only halfway through the convention, but so far we’ve gotten flashy trailers for the biggest blockbusters. Set to 1080p, fullscreen it, and get hyped up with us right here.

Bloodborne - February 5, 2015

The sadistic creators of Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls have a new IP coming out for PS4. Along with upping the graphical ante, this title looks quicker-paced and has a gothic flair to it with a dash of steampunk for good measure. And the monsters look just as uniquely freaky as you’d expect.

Deep Down - 2015

Deep Down is upcoming PS4 action game from Capcom due out next year. It has the dragon-slaying action of the Souls games with an ambiguous present time dynamic a la Assassin’s Creed. The fights look like a blast, but I’m interested to see how the two very different settings relate. If the game’s a hit, this looks like the start of a whole new franchise.

Silent Hills -TBA

If the terrifying PT demo didn’t freak you out, 1) you’re a liar and 2) you should watch the new trailer from TGS. It has some of the most twisted imagery from the series yet. The harkens back to the first few titles of the series that were disturbing without being explicit. This incarnation looks like it takes advantage of next-gen graphics while staying true to its graphically restrained, mind-over-matter roots.

Final Fantasy XV - TBA

The Final Fantasy series has had an inverse relationship with technology. The more technically cutting-edge the game, the further it gets from FF’s classic spirit. That may be a little blunt, but I grew up with the awesome, pixelated Fantasys of the 90s, and I’ve been waiting years for the series to live up to that history. At the very least, I’ll give XV a chance because it’s so damn pretty. But if that’s also its downfall, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The Evil Within - October 14, 2014

I’m not going to lie. Footage of The Evil Within makes my heart rate go up. It comes from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, but you can’t tell from looking at it. This game has an unrelenting terror factor that the original REs only hinted that. The story is a lot more personal, and will be a big part of the game. The exposition we’ve seen so far reminds me of a more visceral, horrifying version of Heavy Rain. It’ll be out just in time for the colder, darker nights of fall. Oh, and Halloween.
