This Video Shows How Much of ‘Game of Thrones’ is Fake

Watching this is almost as good as the actual show.

Do you ever look at those foreign landscapes and huge battle scenes in Game of Thrones and think, “I wonder where they shot that?” A new video from visual effects studio Rodeo FX shows just how much of that doesn’t even exist. (Warning: This video may cause you to not trust your eyes.)

Game of Thrones, Season 4 – VFX breakdown from Rodeo FX on Vimeo.

Rodeo FX certainly had their work cut out for them, but they delivered on all fronts. Everything looks impeccable, from the hundreds of virtual actors to the matte paintings that make up the lush backgrounds. Weather, time of day, and geography are drastically changed in almost every shot.

What’s really impressive is how believable the virtual lighting is. Game of Thrones is known for its gritty, realistic feel, so all parts of it have to stay true to real life. Well, except for the dragons. That part’s a little far-fetched.
