The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1: After Katniss destroys the Quarter Quell games, she is taken to the highly secure and secretly preserved District 13 where President Coin urges her to become the symbol of rebellion. Katniss agrees, as long as they save Peeta from the Capitol. The series as a whole is a fascinating story about the role of media in political unrest, and how media influence can cheapen serious issues just as much as it can inspire real change. But there is something always lacking in the film presentation, and Mockingjay, Part 1 epitomizes it.Each of the movies are in no way self-contained. You have to watch the previous one immediately before and the next one immediately after to follow along, and you’re never satisfied. That’s how they getcha. Throughout this movie I was constantly tense and on the verge of tears. There was no balance of high and low points, just an awkward tedious tumble through angst, and then it was over. Not a pleasant movie-going experience. But maybe I’m just mad I can’t watch the next one. I really wish the Hunger Games had been a television series instead of a film series, but because the story is so fascinating, I’m going to go with 3.5 white roses out of 5. Why white roses? Like always, see the movie to find out. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 is now in theaters.
