Larry King NowNov 28 '16

Famed actress Tippi Hedren details how her legendary thriller 'The Birds' was made and opens up about the physical and emotional toll the filming process took on her.

Larry King: How the hell did you do “The Birds?”

Tippi Hedren: No, how did I survive “The Birds?”

Larry King: But there were birds, right?

Tippi Hedren: Yes, and we didn’t have CGI then, so we had to use real ones. And it was, the scene at the end where all the birds come and attack me when I open that door, you know that could have been done very easily with – in about a day, shooting with me. And then, goes over to the laboratory. But it was a full week of…

Larry King: Shooting that?

Tippi Hedren: Yeah. Our poor prop man with raven and seagull and boxes of them which they just alternately hurled at me for four days. Four, five days.

Larry King: Were you hurt at all?

Tippi Hedren: At the very end. I was so exhausted I was just – I mean, you know they really didn’t need five days of that? That was just kind of, I don’t know what it was. Cruelty? It was mean.

Larry King: Did the directory say, ‘cue the birds?’

Tippi Hedren: Yes. Yes.
