Yes, ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek

‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ creator and star Rachel Bloom says she never thought anyone would take the title of her CW show at face value but, because of the show’s network home, found people doing just that.

Larry King: The title of the show.

Rachel Bloom: Yeah.

Larry King: Is that people call all women crazy?

Rachel Bloom: Yeah. Yeah. You know it was funny because the show was always from such a feminist perspective, we never thought that people would take the title at face value. It’s like, I don’t know, it’s like calling a show Fat Bitch. It’s just so inflammatory you’re gonna deconstruct it. But because we were on a network people just thought, oh we’re gonna tell a story about a crazy girl like, “I need dick. Blah blah blah.” But it was always meant to be, I mean from the start ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ what does that mean, is she crazy? People call her crazy, she calls herself crazy, and in the pilot there’s a moment where she’s like “I moved out here for love. I’m crazy. Oh my God, I’m crazy.” So we were always meaning to deconstruct it, but it took people a little bit of time to realize that’s what we were doing.
