'Step Brothers 2' false rumors run rampant online

News of long anticipated 'Step Brothers' sequel just a hoax

Step Brothers 2

Sorry, Step Brothers fans: the news of a sequel to the 2008 comedy starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly was just a hoax.

The internet was buzzing this morning after rumors of the movie started floating around. It’s not exactly clear which website planted the false story.  Or why?  Maybe wishful thinking?

The website missopen.com appears to be one of the first sites to report on the news with the headline “Step Brothers 2 to Begin Filming this Fall in Sacramento, Calif.”.  But as of 3pm est, the site was no longer loading.  Another website, localnews33.com, also floated the story, with a similar headline but with Richmond, VA as the filming location.

Reddit.com, as so often is the case, was the match that set the leak on fire.  It was also the place where the story was quickly tamped out.

The truth is, there is no movie planned soon…but that doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen.  Director Adam McKay has said in the past that it could become a reality at some point, telling ign.com, “Not right now, but man oh man, if we had an idea, and the funny thing is the older Will and Reilly get, the funnier idea gets. So is it possible when they’re like 57, 58-years old, we do a Step Brothers sequel? Maybe.”

We’ll keep our fingers crossed, Adam.
