How Carlos Slim Influenced Ashton Kutcher's Parenting Skills

by Lindsay Roth

Okay, I'm just going to say it: Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis' childcare decision is officially considered a news story (after Kutcher's shocking revel on Ellen that he and Kunis are NOT hiring a nanny) as evidenced here and here and here and here.

Putting that troubling revelation aside (not their nanny decision, but that it’s news), let's take a moment to reflect not on the fact that Wyatt's diapers are being changed solely by her movie star parents, but on Ashton's position on family, child-rearing and how he and Kunis are choosing to be the best parents they can be. Especially since the last time we had Ashton on Larry King Now (here), he was focused on his role of Steve Jobs and not on his current one as a father.

  • Kutcher is inspired by Carlos Slim (and we couldn't agree more!):“There’s a great quote by Carlos Slim, and he said, ‘Most people think they need to make a better world for their children, but the reality is we need to make better children for our world.’ And I try to live by that. And I think I really look at this as the greatest opportunity of my life.”

  • He can be present and he's choosing to be present - While many have to balance the juggling act of life, work and children, there are plenty of others who can be present and choose not to be.

  • He's grateful:“She’s the greatest mom,” the Two and a Half Men star says. “I go to work every day, and I come home and she’s perfect. And it just seems like everything went amazing. And I know that something probably didn’t go amazing, but she never tells … it’s unbelievable. She’s incredible.”

  • He's doing the best he can to protect his daughter in a world where his nanny decision is news: 'We immediately went home and reserved all the domain names. We've got the Twitter handle - the Instagram - everything you could possibly get -I don’t want a porn site with my daughter’s name!'

  • He's already giving her gifts that are more thoughtful than material: 'We write her emails. One day she’ll be able to look at it and see the kinds of things people had to say.'

  • He recognizes that being a father can make you a hero:'It fulfills this hero things I have. I have this personal - I want to be a hero ego thing. That sort of hero fantasy I have is completely satiated!'
