Carole Bayer Sager on ageism in songwriting

Larry King NowDec 07 '16

Legendary songwriter Carole Bayer Sager says her phone isn’t ringing like it used to, pointing to ageism in the music industry as a contributing factor.

Larry King: Do you still write?

Carole Bayer Sager: Well I did for Hillary. And I’m thinking maybe I’d like to write again. Just have to find someone who wants to write with me.

Larry King: Really?

Carole Bayer Sager: Yeah, yeah. You know, there’s ageism involved in songwriting, for sure. For sure. I mean there are exceptions -

Larry King: Do people say, ‘she’s old’?

Carole Bayer Sager: Well people say, ‘get me a young Carole Bayer Sager to write the lyric for this movie’ or ‘write a song for me.’ I used to get calls once a week. Will you write for this movie? I wrote so many movies’ themes. Some of them very successful, like “Nobody Does it Better” and “Arthur’s Theme” and “The Prayer” from…

Larry King: Oh.

Carole Bayer Sager: David Foster and I, “Prayer.” Celine Dion and Andrea Boccelli, but I don’t get those calls anymore. Which made me move into painting, which I loved for awhile. And then someone suggested I write this book, which I also love. I know that if I can be creative, I’ll be happy in my lifetime.
