Larry King: Was the marriage to Bacharach tempestuous?
Carole Bayer Sager: Mine or Angie’s?
Larry King: Angie’s was, all right, yours.
Carole Bayer Sager: I just never felt secure, being with Burt. I felt like he enjoyed other women looking at him, and he was, when I met him, so extraordinarily handsome and I was so completely superficial that I just kept looking at him and thinking, ‘oh my God, he’s so handsome and I don’t really look like I belong with him,’ you know?
Larry King: Really?
Carole Bayer Sager: Well the first thing he ever gave me as a gift was a poster of a woman’s legs, long legs like, you know I’m 5’1” and there’s this long legged beauty’s legs and I thought, ‘what is he telling me?’ And I felt like what he probably was telling me was I should get my short, little legs out of here as soon as possible but I stayed with him. It was good at the beginning, it was really good, and I always wondered if I was his muse, and if he really needed me to write songs again.
Larry King: Why did you break up?
Carole Bayer Sager: Well he found someone else to be his newer muse who was 15 years younger than me, I was 16 years younger than Burt so look…
Larry King: Do you remain close? Do you talk?
Carole Bayer Sager: We do, and he’s been a great dad to Christopher, our son, so I can’t fault him there. I don’t think he’s great husband material, perhaps.
