Trump’s election got June Diane Raphael to confront her privilege

Larry King - You said that the election of Donald Trump has gotten you to confront your own privilege. What do you mean by that?

JDR - I was really surprised, to be totally honest, that one person could vote for him. I found that actually very shocking, and I know a lot of people didn't find that shocking and were in communities where they're very aware of the hatred that's coming at them, and I think that I, as a person who is a white person, was very surprised that so many people could endorse that type of hate speech and someone who promoted such division.

Larry King - Why do you think he got away with it?

JDR - Well, I think people voted for him, and I think--

Larry King - Why?

JDR - Why did people vote for him? Well, I think for a number of reasons, but I think that--

Larry King - He touched a nerve? He touched--

JDR - Yeah, and I think that a lot of times when people are disenfranchised and feel that they are economically being pushed out, that it's very easy to blame that on the other, and it's very easy to do other-ing, and so when Donald Trump presents enemies and reasons why they don't have their jobs or their jobs are not the jobs they used to have, that that's sort of an easy solution.
