Fatal Shark Attack

(KTLA) -- A 39-year old man from Orcutt was killed in a shark attack near Surf Beach in Lompoc Tuesday. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department received a report that a man, identified as Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., had been bit by a shark at 10:58 a.m. A friend, who was also surfing and witnessed the shark attack, swam over to assist the victim pulling him out of the ocean and onto the beach, according to a sheriff's office press release. Paramedics from Vandenberg Air Force Base responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The type of shark involved and other details are under investigation at this point. Surf Beach has been closed until further notice. Santa Barbara County and Vandenberg officials will determine when to reopen the beach once their investigation is complete. The attack comes two-years after 19-year-old UCSB student Lucas Ransom was killed by a great white shark at the same beach.
