The 35-year-old Chinese man identified as Chen Zuihan carried the meat cleaver onto an elementary school playground, slashing eight children in his wake. According to the South China Morning Post, none of the children were fatally wounded, but all eight required hospital care. The victims reportedly between the ages of six and eight. One remains in critical condition.
It's not an unfamilar tragedy in China. In 2010 seven students and two teachers were killed during another meat cleaver attack in Hanzhong City. And 22 schoolchildren were stabbed in 2012 by an intruder in a Northern China school.
Police have not yet identified a motive for the attack.
