Change.org petition slams Chuck Rosenberg, acting head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, for commenting that medical marijuana is a “joke.” The petitioners state scientific studies prove that there are benefits of medicinal pot.

UPDATE: Over 100,000 people and counting have signed the Change.org petition to fire DEA
Chief Chuck Rosenberg for calling medicinal marijuana "a joke" in an interview with CBS News.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, this is more than double the number of signatures a former Change.org petition received, which led to the resignation of ex-DEA chief Michele Leonhart.

The New York Times stated that Leonhart resigned after standing against the legalization of marijuana in Washington and Colorado, despite President Obama's support towards the states.  Not only that, the House Oversight Committee was alsreportedly outraged over Leonhart's handling of a scandal alleging that DEA agents had participated in sex parties, with prostitutes provided by the drug cartels.

The question now is: will this new Change.org petition bring about some real change in the DEA?

The website Change.org has a new petition — that as of this moment — has nearly 40,000 signatures.

The petition’s aim: to fire DEA chief Chuck Rosenberg. It needs at least 50,000 signatures to be processed.

The protesters who started the petition state:

While it's nothing new for drug war bureaucrats to oppose sensible marijuana policies, Rosenberg's comments go way too far.  Medical marijuana is not a "joke" to the millions of seriously ill patients in a growing number of states who use it legally in accordance with doctors' recommendations.  It is not a "joke" to the growing number of prominent medical organizations — American Nurses Association, American College of Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, for example -- who know that cannabis has real and proven medical benefits.  And it's not a "joke" to the clear majority of U.S voters who support passing laws to protect medical marijuana patients from harassment by police and the DEA.President Obama should fire Chuck Rosenberg and appoint a new DEA administrator who will respect science, medicine, patients and voters.

The petition began following Rosenberg’s comments during an interview with CBS.According the network, Rosenberg said:

“What really bothers me is the notion that marijuana is also medicinal because it’s not...We can have an intellectually honest debate about whether we should legalize something that is bad and dangerous, but don’t call it medicine — that is a joke.”

Then, he clarified:

“There are pieces of marijuana — extracts or constituents or component parts — that have great promise...But if you talk about smoking the leaf of marijuana — which is what people are talking about when they talk about medicinal marijuana — it has never been shown to be safe or effective as a medicine.”
