Gov. Larry Hogan has declared a state of emergency in Baltimore and activated the National Guard. City-wide curfew goes into effect tomorrow.

"With everything that we've been through, ain't no way you can sit here and be silent in the face of injustice," Rev. Jamal H. Bryant exhorted during his impassioned eulogy for Freddie Gray at New Shiloh Baptist Church.

A few hours ago, Governor Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency in Baltimore and activated the National Guard.

State police were sent to the scene, and officers from surrounding counties were also brought in to respond, the New York Times reports.

The state of emergency is in response to protests that turned violent today following the funeral for Freddie Gray, a black man who died after suffering a spinal injury while in Baltimore police custody.

Yahoo News reported that “Gray was arrested after making eye contact with officers and then running away”, according to police. The twenty-five-year-old was held down, handcuffed and loaded into a van without a seat belt. The police then proceeded to take him on a “rough ride.” They placed leg cuffs on him when he became irate inside the van due to the conditions.

Gray asked for medical help several times even before being put in the van, but paramedics were not called until after a 30-minute ride. Police have acknowledged that he should have received medical attention on the spot where he was arrested, but they have not said how his spine was injured.

During today’s protests, officers were reportedly hit with bottles and rocks. Police retaliated with tear gas.

"The eyes of the country are all on us," former judge and Gray family attorney William "Billy" Murphy told those who gathered at New Shiloh Baptist Church to pay respects to Gray. "They want to see if we have the stuff to get this right."

Murphy denounced "the blue wall" that he said protects police from accountability.

"Let's don't kid ourselves. We wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for video cameras," he said of the cellphone recordings made by bystanders of Gray's arrest on April 12. "Instead of one cover-up behind that blue wall after another cover-up behind that blue wall … and one lie after another lie, now we see the truth as never before. It's not a pretty picture.
