According to the Associated Press, Blackfeet tribal leaders in Montana have joined environmental groups, as well as other American Indian tribes and – get this – the band Pearl Jam, to campaign for the cancellation of oil and gas leases close to Glacier National Park.
Blackfeet tribal leaders are planning to put up billboards to raise awareness for the cause. They’re looking to cancel 18 leases. The AP reports that the leases are within the vicinity of sites continuously occupied by Blackfeet for thousands of years, well before many of our ancestors arrived in America.
Pearl Jam even took to twitter to protest:
This #EarthDay join Jeff Ament, Senator Jon Tester, & the Blackfeet Nation to protect sacred land in MT: http://t.co/7emcqdc8T4#PearlJam
