A country clerk in Grenada Country, Mississippi, chose to resign this week instead of issuing same sex marriage licenses.
Linda Barnette has worked for the county for 24 years but decided that she could not continue her work once the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage across the country.
“I am a follower of Christ and I believe strongly that the Bible is my final authority,” she wrote. ‘The Bible teaches that a marriage is to be between a man and a woman. Therefore, because of the recent ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court, I can no longer fulfill my duties as Circuit Clerk and issue marriage licenses to same sex couples.”
The Bible is her "final authority."If that's the case, did she never - in her 24-year run - encounter a previously-divorced couple asking for a marriage license. Wonder why she didn't all then?
