Terrorist Related Fatalities Up 81% Across the Globe

According to the report, the total number of terrorist-attack-related fatalities jumped 81 percent between 2013 and 2014, bringing the death toll to 32,727. There were a total of 13,463 terrorist attacks that occurred in that time period in 95 countries. That's a 35 percent increase in only one year. Countries that sustained the brunt of these attacks include Iraq, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Nigeria. The report shows that terrorist related Kidnappings had also gone up three times.  

The Hill states,

"The report points to the growing deadly role of groups like Nigeria’s Boko Haram and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which have the ability to launch attacks that kill scores of people at once.

There were 20 attacks that each killed more than 100 people last year,compared to two in 2013. Five of those attacks were carried out by ISIS in Iraq, and nine by Boko Haram."

When asked about the efficacy of US global counter terrorism efforts, Tina Kaidanow, State Department Coordinator for Counterterrorism, told reporters, 

"The numbers don’t tell the whole story. They’re geographically very much in conflict areas and the lethality of those attacks have really gone up because of the savagery of them.”
