Larry King Celebrates the Dalai Lama's 80th Birthday

The 14th Dalai Lama, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and one of the world's most recognized spiritual leaders, joins Larry King to discuss compassion, childhood stories, and his opinions on some of the world's current leaders.

Born July 6, 1935, the current Dalai Lama is celebrating 80 years today!  He is the longest-lived incumbent from the school Tibetan Buddhism. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in1989, and is known for his genuine advocacy for Tibetans worldwide and hislifelong interest in modern science. From his exile to Indiain 1959, the Dalai Lama has stood as a strong leader of nonviolent oppositionto China’s occupation of Tibet.

He has traveled the world, advocating for the welfare of Tibetans, teaching Tibetan Buddhism, investigating the interface between Buddhism and science, and talking about the importance of compassion as the source of a happy life.

Joined today by Nobel Laureates, performers, artists, politicians, and scientists from around the globe, the Dalai Lama leads a three-day summit for Global Compassion.The event is presented in partnership with UCI and the Center for Living Peace.

After an in-depth discussion regarding everything from ideas on God, to whether or not His Holiness had ever been in love, Larry King proceeded to the summit stage. There he was joined by Ann Curry to re-introduce the Dalai Lama to thousands of spectators and students.

In an interview with US television host and master of ceremonies Ann Curry, the Dalai Lama said his birthday wish was "the same as all beings. I wish to live a happy life."

"My life is dedicated to the well-being of others. If humanity is happy, then I'll be happy, because each of us is dependent on others," he said, according to his official website.
