Nasa astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindren have completed their first space walk outside the International Space Station nearly 250 miles above Earth. The 7-hour and 6-minute space walk ended at 3:19 p.m. EDT.

The astronauts completed most of the planned tasks during their walk, which included applying a thermal cover on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, greasing components in a robotic arm and beginning work to rig power and data system cables for for the future installation of a docking port for additional spacecraft.

Kelly and Lindgren will take a second walk outside the space station on Friday, Nov. 6 to complete additional maintenance tasks to the space station.
The two spacewalks flank two significant ISS milestones: On October 29 Kelly becomes the U.S. astronaut who has lived in space the longest during a single U.S. spaceflight and November 2 marks the 15th year of a continuous human presence in space.
