Did Ted Cruz steal a line from 'The American President'?

In an attempt to strike back at Donald Trump's attacks on his wife, Republican hopeful Ted Cruz uses a line that sounds very similar to one from 'The American President,' a 1995 movie starring Michael Douglas.

Who better than Aaron Sorkin to make you sound presidential?

Oscar-winner Sorkin, of course, is the writer behind the hit show The West Wing and the Michael Douglas film,The American President - the latter of which, the internet speculates, had a line of dialogue allegedly lifted, almost verbatim, by Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz.

In an interview with CNN, Sen. Cruz related the ongoing Battle of the Wives he’s currently embroiled in with Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

FADE IN:

INT.  CNN STUDIO - DAY

Senator Cruz’s, dressed in a dark blue suit and grey tie, narrows his eyes.  Behind the on screen banner that blares: WIVES BECOME TARGETS IN TRUMP-CRUZ FIGHT,

Cruz sharpens his voice and says the following:

SENATOR CRUZ

Last night Donald threatened my wife.  He went directly after

my wife.  She is my best friend in the world.  If Donald wants

to get in a character fight, he's better off stickin' with me.

Because Heidi is way out of his league.

Tough talkin’, Ted!

But then, as the folks at Mashable noticed, the line is remarkably close to Michael Douglas's line, as President Andrew Sheppard, defending his on-screen romance with Sydney Allen Wade, played by Annette Bening.

INT.  THE PRESS BRIEFING ROOM - EARLY MORNING

PRESIDENT SHEPPARD

…You want a character debate, Bob?  You better stick

with me, ‘cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your

league.

Chalk it up to coincidence?  Or perhaps we can look forward to more Sorkin retorts at the next Republican shouting match debate:

SENATOR CRUZ

(to Donald Trump)

You want the truth?  You want the truth?

Donald, you can’t handle the truth!!!

FADE TO BLACK.

Care to name what movie that's from?
