The Syrian refugee crisis TRUMPS our own border "crisis" in the U.S.
Don't care about Syria? Maybe you should.
The country is currently in a civil war and and large portion of its population is in desperate need of help.
Here are some sobering facts, courtesy of Amnesty International:
- 10.8 Million people are in urgent need of humanitarian aid
- 45% of the country's population has been displaced. That's 10 Million Syrians.
- Of those, 6.5 Million are displaced within Syria.
- A staggering 4 Million are seeking refuge in other countries.
Amnesty International reports that neighboring countries Qatar, U.A.E., Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain -- some of the wealthiest nations in the Middle East -- have offered zero resettlement places to the 4 Million refugees in need.
Instead, 95% of these Syrians are relying on Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan -- and get this --- Iraq and Egypt for refuge. When Iraq, hardly a place to seek refuge in its current states, welcomes over 200,000 refugees, but the country right below it, Saudi Arabia, welcomes ZERO, there's something wrong, isn't there?
Don't be surprised though by their inaction: these countries aren't exactly Switzerland either. The Washington Post reports that Qatar, U.A.E., Saudi Arabia and Kuwait all played a role in the "funding and arming of rebel factions fighting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad."
What do you think should be done to help these refugees? Who should be stepping up to the plate?
