Star Trek Strikes Again

Yet another Star Trek-inspired bit of technology is on its way.

You know all that crazy space age communication technology in Star Trek, like the communicator and the universal translator? Well, we’ve already seen the communicator inspire this thing called a cell phone and it looks like we’re about to get another dose of Trek tech in the not too distant future.

This week at the Code Conference Microsoft debuted a version of the universal translator that uses Skype, called the Skype Translator. Check out the demo in the video below.

Of course, the tech isn’t sleek and shiny and perfect yet, but it’s pretty damn cool. Aside from the fact that it can help all kinds of people speak to each other when they couldn’t before, it also brings good rap for Trekkies everywhere cause we knew this was possible from day one. (Although, to be fair, the idea was first introduced through this book called First Contact, which you can get an audible copy of here).

What do you think about the new frontier in Treknology (haha)? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @Dweebcast.
