Still Alice, Richard Glatzer & Wash Westmoreland

This is a ridiculously, overwhelmingly, crushingly sad movie about early onset Alzheimers. Start to finish it gives you a headache, makes you exhausted and teary-eyed. BUT, Julianne Moore is amazing. She is dead on and heart breakingly great. She blows by everyone in the movie - they are all clearly just there to “support” her. Unfortunately the shining light of her genius only serves to highlight the rest of the film’s shortcomings, especially Alec Baldwin’s performance. To be (sort of) fair, he’s miscast. That said, he’s just a big bloated buffoon - completely useless. It always seems gratuitous to say, “the book was better” but, well, stick to the book. Its nuances and detail do not come through at all in the film and it just seems forced and contrived.

Don’t bring your kids. Grandma will, if she’s lucky, forget she saw it.
