Nightcrawler, Dan Gilroy 2014
Lou Bloom is an original and we immediately see his faults, his determination and his weirdness. He has a look in his eye that conveys his don’t mess with me attitude Watching Nightcrawler feels a bit like being in a video game. You have to keep up and go along for the ride. It’s shot incredibly intelligently and LA has never looked darker (literally and metaphorically!) or more beautiful. Gilroy is able to take his experience writing action films and mesh it seamlessly with the desperate ambition of his disturbed character.
Jake Gyllenhal really pulls it off. He’s strange and compelling in a very dark way and brings you along on his trip.
Not really for grandma and definitely not for kids.
