Rose Water, Jon Stewart, 2014
By Ali Tenenbaum
This is an overly ambitious and effortful movie. That sometimes takes away from the overall enjoyment and meaningfulness of the whole thing.BUT, the story is interesting and the movie has the benefit of having an amazing lead (full disclosure: Gael Garcia Bernal could read the phone book for three hours and I would love him). He carries it, which is saying a lot because of the aforementioned ambition thing. It’s worth seeing though.Let’s face it, who doesn’t want to root for the mister-down-the-middle-medium guy who’s found a way to make fun of the news of the day in a comedic, very clever yet not too offensive way (Jon Stewart, director!).
Grandma and teenagers could get into it…
